Last of the Dogmen [VHS]

Last of the Dogmen [VHS]

$9.98

Despite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn’t), Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote m…

Three days in the summer of 1863, at a place called Gettysburg. Although it received a theatrical release, this four-hour depiction of the bloody Civil War battle was shot as a made-for-television film. But no taint of cheapness or shortcuts should stick to this magnificent picture (well, except maybe for those phony-looking mustaches). Based on Michael Shaara’s book The Killer Angels, this film t…

Missionaries travel to the Brazilian rain forest and make a mess of everything. What else is new? Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen’s well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But their definitions…

Widely regarded as the most gifted contemporary American commentator on the cinema, Jonathan Rosenbaum focuses on the political and social dynamics of the contemporary movie scene–exploring the many links between film and our ideological identities as individuals and as a society.I think there is a very good film critic in the United States today, a successor of James Agee, and that is Jonathan Rosenbaum. He’s one of the best; we don’t have writers like him in France today. He’s like Andre Bazin.–Jean-Luc GodardpRosenbaum is unusually at home in the worlds of both academic film study and weekly film reviewing. There is great sophisticated intelligence without impenetrable high theory, and there is wonderful accessibility without cheerleading. This voice belongs to a true cosmopolitan, who makes movies matter on aesthetic and political grounds, who attends to major non-American films neglected in this country, and whose growing impatience with the contemporary Hollywood product retains a sense of humor.–Michael Rogin, author of Blackface, White NoisepRosenbaum is one of the few film reviewers with a deep understanding of film form, its sources in film history and theory, and even more its place as a twentieth-century art form. He refuses to embrace high-art intellectualism or pop-art fun exclusively and likewise refuses to forgo either. The unique quality of his reviews is their immediacy. He engages and argues with film audiences, filmmakers, and distributors, demanding a response to the standards he sets. It is in this sense that this collection is profoundly political.–Tom Gunning, author of D. W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative FilmIn this new collection of reviews and essays, Jonathan Rosenbaum focuses on the political and social dynamics of the contemporary movie scene. Rosenbaum, widely regarded as the most gifted contemporary American commentator on the cinema, explores the many links between film and our ideological identities @õÂ?\(öÿ¾Úx

The Most Famous Cowboy of the Movies

The Most Famous Cowboy of the Movies

$18.75

The most famous movie cowboy of the movies died violently in 1940 and is virtually forgotten today because all but ten of his films were silent movies.pTom Mix was a town marshal and cowboy in the Oklahoma Territory, a rodeo champion and a wild west show performer. With his devil-may-care attitude, quick wit and penchant for doing breath-taking stunts on his wonder horse, Tony, Tom Mix went on to become the #1 movie cowboy of silent films, earning millions of dollars at a time when movie tickets cost pennies. Mix performed for over 71,000,000 fans through his film and live performances and became famous the world over for his squeaky clean image. In his time he was as famous as baseball great Babe Ruth and world champion boxer Jack Dempsey, both of whom were his friends.pWhile he basked in this incredible acclaim, Tom Mix lived in fear that his deep, dark secrets would be discovered and his career and his cherished image would be destroyed.pCelebrated author Richard D. Jensen has spent more than 30 years researching the life of Tom Mix, the man hailed as the idol of every American boy.pWith incredible detail, much of it gained from hundreds of original letters, records, documents and eyewitness accounts of Mix’s life, The Amazing Tom Mix cuts through 100 years of public relations mythology, tall tales and outright lies to bring the true and inspiring story of a man whose Saturday matinee cowboy image would become the standard for all of the movie cowboys who rode the silver screen after him.pHere is Tom Mix as he really was…a captivating biography … brilliant … delightful … It is a splendid book.br-Richard S. Wheeler, five-time Spur Award winning authorof Trouble In Tombstone,p.,. the most complete biography of Mix’s life of trials, tribulations and victories.br-John Duncklee, author of Bull By The Tale,

Jean Ingelow (1820-1897) was an English poet and novelist. As a girl she contributed verses and tales to magazines under the pseudonym of Orris, but her first (anonymous) volume, A Rhyming Chronicle of Incidents and Feelings, did not appear until her thirtieth year. She followed this book of verse in 1851 with a story, Allerton and Dreux, but it was the publication of her Poems in 1863 which suddenly made her a popular writer. They ran rapidly through numerous editions, were set to music, and sung in every drawing-room, and in the United States obtained even greater public acclaim. In 1867 she published The Story of Doom and Other Poems, and then gave up verse for a while and became industrious as a novelist. Off the Skelligs appeared in 1872, Fated to be Free in 1873, Sarah de Berenger in 1880, and John Jerome: His Thoughts and Ways in 1886. She also wrote Studies for Stories (1864), Stories Told to a Child (1865), Mopsa the Fairy (1869) and other excellent stories for children. Her third series of Poems was published in 1885.

American Audiences on Movies and Moviegoing

American Audiences on Movies and Moviegoing

$63.95

p A unique perspective on half a century of American cinema — from the audience’s point of view. Tom Stempel goes beyond the comments of professional reviewers, concentrating on the opinions of ordinary people. He traces shifting trends in genre and taste, examining and questioning the power films have in American society. Stempel blends audience response with his own observations and analyzes box office results that identify the movies people actually went to see, not just those praised by the critics. Avoiding statistical summary, he presents the results of a survey on movies and moviegoing in the respondents’ own words — words that surprise, amuse, and irritate. The moviegoers respond: Big bad plane, big bad motorcycle, and big bad Kelly McGillis. — On Top Gun All I can recall were the slave girls and the Golden Calf sequence and how it got me excited. My parents must have been very pleased with my enthusiasm for the Bible. — On why a seven-year-old boy stayed up to watch The Ten Commandments I learned the fine art of seduction by watching Faye Dunaway smolder. — A woman’s reaction to seeing Bonnie and Clyde At age fifteen Jesus said he would be back, he just didn’t say what he would look like. — On E.T. Quasimodo is every seventh grader. — On why The Hunchback of Notre Dame should play well with middle-schoolers A moronic, very ‘Hollywoody’ script, and a bunch of dancing teddy bears. — On Return of the Jedi I couldn’t help but think how Mad magazine would lampoon this. — On The Exorcist

Hollywood: Mecca of the Movies

Hollywood: Mecca of the Movies

The Hollywood that greeted Cendrars in 1936 was in its heydey. Cendrars was often snubbed by studio guards and the stars and industry movers and shakers with whom he was trying to hobnob. His response was to invent a wildly funny Hollywood of his own, embellishing his adventures and mixing them with black humor, star anecdotes, and wry social commentary.Blaise Cendrars, one of twentieth-century France’s most gifted men of letters, came to Hollywood in 1936 for the newspaper Paris-Soir, Already a well-known poet, Cendrars was a celebrity journalist whose perceptive dispatches from the American dream factory captivated millions. These articles were later published as Hollywood: Mecca of the Movies, which has since appeared in many languages. Remarkably, this is its first translation into English.brHollywood in 1936 was crowded with stars, moguls, directors, scouts, and script girls. Though no stranger to filmmaking (he had worked with director Abel Gance), Cendrars was spurned by the industry greats with whom he sought to hobnob. His response was to invent a wildly funny Hollywood of his own, embellishing his adventures and mixing them with black humor, star anecdotes, and wry social commentary.brPart diary, part tall tale, this book records Cendrars’s experiences on Hollywood’s streets and at its studios and hottest clubs. His impressions of the town’s drifters, star-crazed sailors, and undiscovered talent are recounted in a personal, conversational style that anticipates the new journalism of writers such as Tom Wolfe.brPerfectly complemented by his friend Jean Guerin’s witty drawings, and following the tradition of European travel writing, Cendrars’s little book about Hollywood offers an astute, entertaining look at 1930s America as reflected in its unique movie mecca.
